In plant kingdom, both Hanbane and Datura belong to one classification of flowering plants called Solanaceae. Both plant species are notoriously known to be toxic.
On one hand, Henbane is known by its other names as black henbane, Hyoscyamus Niger, Herba Apollinaris, or simply stinking nightshade. It has long been known to have psychoactive effects which are commonly used in witchcraft and magic brews thus created a negative significance for the plant during old times and up to present. Among its psychoactive effects are feelings (or impressions) of flying and visual hallucinations. It is proven to be highly toxic and even fatal when eaten by animals in small doses. When ingested by humans, it can cause dilated pupils, hallucination, flushed skin, and restlessness among many others. The uncommon symptoms of Habane include ataxia, convulsions, hypertension, tachycardia, hyperpyrexia, and vomiting.
On the other hand, Datura is also known by its other names such as loco weed, Jimson weed, toloache, thorn apple, or devil’s trumpet. It is also included in the lists of witches’ plants together with Henbane. Among its notable effects are hallucinations to a point of being delirious, and atropine poisoning when ingested directly. It is said to have been used in performing murder or suicide. Also included effects are amnesia, tachycardia, weird and aggressive behavior, hyperthermia, and severe case of mydriasis causing agonizing photophobia that can actually last for several days.
Despite the quite startling adverse effects of Hanbane and Datura, both are also applied in the field of medicine to help cure sickness but only to some extent and with the use of skillful and knowledgeable hands. Henbane is used as a painkiller and sedative that is intended to ease spasms and muscle pains as in the case of rheumatism, abdominal cramping, and pain caused by kidney stones. It is also applied to cure health conditions such as bronchitis and asthma among many others. In contrast, Datura is used to cure hemorrhoids, sprains, arthritis, abscesses and boils, and even snake bites to name few.
