Provigil and Nuvigil are medications prescribed to treat sleep apnea and other sleeping disorders. There are currently no medical reasons why some people experience excessive sleepiness. To eliminate the symptoms of exhaustion and sleepiness, doctors normally prescribe analeptic drugs like Provigil or Nuvigil.
1. Nuvigil
This medication is designed for promoting wakefulness or attentiveness. Some individuals are very sleepy during the day and this problem may arise because of narcolepsy or sleep apnea. In some cases, doctors can prescribe Nuvigil for other purposes also.
Nuvigil usually works on the nervous system of the user and thus it also affects the reaction and thinking processes. Individuals who are prescribed this particular drug should therefore inform their healthcare provider whether they have kidney or liver disease, hypertension, angina and a drug addiction history. Furthermore, users also need to avoid doing activities that require total alertness such as driving or operating machinery since this drug induces drowsiness.
2. Provigil
Provigil is prescribed in cases of extreme sleepiness due to sleep disorders. However, its use is also beneficial in other conditions. While Provigil promotes wakefulness, it is unclear how it actually works. Some doctors believe that it works through altering the neurotransmitters within the brain.
Provigil should not be ingested if the user has an allergy to its constituents. Additionally, those who develop rashes after consuming it should also avoid it. Pregnant and breast feeding women are advised to avoid using Provigil. Some of the adverse effects that this medication produces includes things like back pain, nausea, trouble sleeping, dizziness and stuffy nose.
In conclusion, both drugs are produced by the same pharmaceutical company, but Provigil was the first drug to be produced among the two. However, there are some doctors who believe that Nuvigil drug is a good improvement of Provigil as it has fewer side effects.
