After completing a college degree, some people find it interesting to pursue their studies by enrolling in a course for master’s degree. Upon its completion, some find it necessary to study further, thereby finding themselves enrolled in a doctorate degree. Among the many offered degrees are Master in Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy. Master of Philosophy is basically a research degree that is a one-year research degree course. This serves as a gateway research course to PhD. PhD or Doctor of Philosophy is a full pledged research degree that can be completed in two streams. Part-time stream of research can be done for up to six years whereas full-time stream of research can be done up to three years.
The major difference between MPhil and PhD is that those enrolled in PhD are required to pass a synopsis or a general thesis paper, approximately six months before the final paper is submitted. In the case of MPhil, submission of a thesis paper is never deemed to be part of the requirements in completing the course.
Another important difference between MPhil and PhD is that the final draft of your research findings is called a thesis for those taking up PhD. On the other hand, the final draft of the research and analysis done by the researcher is known as dissertation, in the case of MPhil.
More so, it is expected that an analysis of the study done in the course of MPhil is completed whereas the findings of the research done in taking up the course of PhD is expected to be completed and duly submitted.
These two degrees are taken to further study the extent of one’s interest. These help in equipping oneself with the necessary knowledge highly related to one’s field of study.
