Differences between House and Trance

Answer #1

Trance and house are subgenres of music that share numerous similarities. The reason for this is the fact that the two developed alongside each other. Hence, they share several elements, specifically the beat structure. However, discover their differences here below.

1. Origin

House stated early in the 80s in Illinois and it enjoyed great growth and popularity among the Latino-Americans, gay people and African Americans. It was played in most discotheques in American and it eventually spread to Europe. However, Trance started after house had been in existence for quite a while. Hence, it is much newer than house music.

2. Focus

With its highly prominent baseline, house music is mainly focused on the melody. It feels warmer as it also uses live-sound elements and funk samples. Even though trance has a similar beat structure like house, it does not produce the live effect of house. Hence, trance is said to prefer the synthetic approach with artificial sound influences.

3. Structure

Both forms of electronic music build up and then release energy. However, in most cases trance goes to a higher level when compared with house. An important trance feature is the presence of long breaks for building tension till the beat comes back in. Even though it can still be inspiring, trance is linked to a dark disposition.

4. Tempo

During the early stages of development, house music generally had less fast tempos. However, it was later developed to faster tempos to meet the dance standards. In contrast, trance has a tempo that ranges from 120-160Bpm. This means it is much faster when contrasted with house.
Note that both music subgenres make up the larger group of electronic music. Most of the time artists fuse the two together with techno so as to create progressive house and thus provide a deeper musical experience.
