Syrup is basically part of the culinary world, which is typically characterized by a thick viscous liquid consisting primarily of a solution of sugar in water. Most often made to caramelized entrees and as part of many luscious desserts, syrup has become popularly known in many parts of the world, mainly for its elegance and sweetness. Syrups have become famous as part of the widely known breakfast meal, pancakes. Syrups have been used to add flavor to pancakes. It can be a corn syrup or a high fructose corn syrup.
Corn syrup is a food additive made from corn starch and composed mainly with glucose. This syrup is used in foods for many purposes like: to enhance the flavor of the food, soften the texture and prevent crystallization of sugar in food. High fructose corn syrup, on the other hand, is found to be sweeter compared to corn syrup. It is basically made from corn syrup which had undergone a process to convert glucose into fructose.
Apart from their base ingredients, corn syrup is distinct form high fructose corn syrup. Simple corn syrup is just made by hydrolyzing corn starch whereas corn fructose syrup is made from the enzymatic action on a group of corn syrup. This means that corn fructose syrup is a dependable product of corn syrup.
More so, studies have been conducted to show their effects on health. It was discovered that high fructose corn syrup increases obesity in human body compared to the simple corn syrup.
In conclusion, despite being commonly used as additives to many food products, it is vital that high fructose corn syrup as well as simple corn syrup be consciously utilized. This is one part of maintaining one’s health at an optimum level.
