References and bibliography are usually used in books or articles. They are completely different and are used in differing contexts. Bibliography is essentially the list of any materials consulted when writing a book or essay. However, references are materials that are referenced within an essay.
You may have researched several essays, websites and books so as to write something. Even though you may have based your writing on these books, the content may not be part of your actual writing. This is referred to as bibliography. Hence, references are actually included during writing.
Whereas references are directly cited within the text, the bibliography cannot be directly cited. References are mainly used for supporting your argument or statement. Hence, they help establish a point in an authoritative way. The reader can refer to the references so as to evaluate whether your statement is correct.
However, bibliography is not meant to support the statement but the whole book in general. Bibliography usually contains all the research materials, which includes magazines, books, websites, scientific papers and other publications that you have consulted. References are only the texts or quotes that have actually been used during writing the essay.
Even though both references and bibliography appear listed on the last page of a book, references are listed before bibliography. Furthermore, a bibliography can contain materials that are already listed on the references, but it also contains additional materials. Both are arranged in an alphabetical manner, but references can be arranged using numeric as well. This means listing the references based on the numbers within the text.
When writing the bibliography, you are supposed to include both names of the author, date of publication, publication place, publishers name and name of book. In contrast, references are just a footnote in which you list the website or book and publication date or when you accessed that website.
