What are the differences between Xylem and Phloem?
Plants are natural living entities that obtain vital functions during their course of growth and development. As they undergo specific changes, particular to their kind, plants are known to possess distinct characteristics that basically support the general existence of life. This fact remains to be possible until this time mainly because they come with specific parts that are of vital functions. Two most vital parts are the xylem and the phloem. Minute as they are, they function significantly to nourish plants and to keep it in good consistency and maintenance.
Despite the fact that the xylem and the phloem bear the same basic function of transporting food and water to and from the different parts of the plants, they possess distinction from one another. Considered as the major difference between the two, xylem and phloem bear disparity in terms of the substance they transport. While and other liquid substances past through the tubular structure of the xylem, phloem has the capacity to permit the needed food and nutrients along its cylindrical configuration.
Apart from their distinct functions, xylem and phloem also differ in terms of structural consistency. While the xylem is made of hard walled vascular tissues, the phloem is typically made up of soft tissue walls.
Basing on this fact, it can be implied that the xylem can eventually wear off and become nonliving tissues, since they necrotize and reach the age of being mature. Phloem, on the contrary, possess the vital function of continuously nourishing the plant, thus they exist as long as the plant exists.
With such cited differences, it can be concluded that xylem and phloem perform vital functions that come in conjunction with one another. Such functions are essential in maintaining and adequately sustaining the life of plants in nature.
