“Drink 8 (8 ounce) glasses of water a day” as health experts or any health conscious individual would say in order to maintain proper hydration in the body. But, water per se is challenged by other drinks that promises to do more than just hydrate the body but also provide nutrients that are lost whenever we workout, perspire, or urinate. And the most popular contender that defies water in its ability to rehydrate is no other than sports drinks.
On one hand, the water that we drink is just plain and simple liquid. Water does not contain any added nutrients or minerals needed by the body for growth and development. The very main purpose why we drink water is to simply rehydrate ourselves when we are thirsty and to be able to flush out toxins that may cause harm or sickness to the body. But, water has its own advantages because when compared to other drinks it is viewed to be safer and healthier in a sense that it has a pH balance of 7. It means that water is pure in its form, it is neither acidic nor base in nature. Plus, it is also the cheapest and most accessible type of drink considering that what you are drinking is tap water.
Sports drinks, in another hand, are specialized beverages that are also capable or rehydrating the body and more. What’s makes it different from water is that sport drinks has included carbohydrates, electrolytes, proteins, and other nutrients as added nutritional content. Because of this, some people view that drinking sports drink after engaging into sports or doing heavy workout is much healthier and helpful than simply drinking water. However, sports drinks are known to be high in acid content and rich in sugar. Some sports drinks also include caffeine in the ingredients, and when mixed with alcoholic drinks it may cause heart failure. What’s more, sports drinks can be quite expensive than a natural water.
