Difference between TKIP and AES

Answer #1

The protection of information is crucial nowadays, particularly when communication over unsafe mediums like wireless networks. Encryption is crucial in this and most Wi-Fi hardware use security protocols like WPA2. For the user, there are two available option s and they include TKIP and also AES.

1. TKIP

It is mainly used in wireless networks and it was developed as a replacement of WEP. This means it still works on any hardware that is compatible with WEP. TKIP offers key mixing like an enhancement over WEP. Additionally, it offers protection from replay attacks through rejecting bad packets and also utilizing the sequence counter.
TKIP also uses 64 bit integrity check to prevent the acceptance of any forged packet. It also required using RC4 like its cipher as it requires ensuring that will operate on all WEP hardware. Even though TKIP prevents numerous attacks that were not prevented by WEP, it still may be vulnerable to some minor attacks.

2. AES

This particular security encryption is recognized like the most secure encryption currently. In reality, it has only been successfully attacked a couple of times. All these attacks were side channels on some certain AES implementations. Since it is very reliable and highly secure, the NSA employs it for the protection of both classified and also non-classified data of the American government.

Simply put, AES functions like the encryption standard, whereas TKIP works like the encryption protocol.

Additionally, TKIP is mainly used in place of WPA, whereas WPA2 makes use of CCMP, which is based on AES, like its encryption protocol. TKIP was essentially made for replacing WEP, while AES acts like the successor of DES.

Very little AES implements can be attacked by attacks, whereas TKIP can be attacked by some few narrow attacks. In general, AES is regarded more secure as compared to TKIP.
