May and shall are modal auxiliary verbs used to show the differences in their usage. While they sound similar, the two words are totally different in their usage when constructing a sentence.
For starters, the word ‘shall’’ shows the first person in the sentences below. Future tense is used when you use ‘shall’ in a sentence.
For example:
1. They shall meet you tomorrow.
2. I shall send you the money
3. You shall respond promptly
4. We shall work when the time is right.
In the sentences above, the verb ‘shall’ shows the first person as singular. The verb is also used to express requests, suggestion and offers as in the sentences below.
1. Shall we send the mail tomorrow?
2. Shall you proceed with the suit?
3. Shall I make the reservations?
The verb ‘shall’ in the sentences above is used to express suggestion and request respectively. In contrast, ‘may’ is a verb used in a sentence where one person asks for permission.
1. May I come tomorrow?
2. May I book the flight?
You can also use the verb ‘may’ to grant permission in some sentences. ‘Yes, they may attend the meeting tomorrow. In this sentence, ‘may’ demonstrated permission granted to attend the meeting.
Moreover, you can use the verb expressively to demonstrate the happening but not certain as the sentence. ‘You may attend the festival this winter’. This sentence is used to express the likelihood of attending the festival during winter.
In another scenario, you can use the verb ‘may’ to express wishes to a person to have good health. For example ‘May you enjoy your youthful life’. In this sentence, the verb ‘May’ expresses a wish to an individual. In a nutshell both verbs should be used in a proper manner according to all rules of grammar.
