What are the differences between Ruby and Garnet?
Birthstones are considered as gifts that come from a precious material such as jewelry and gemstones. They typically serve as symbols of the month of birth with respect to the Gregorian calendar. For each month, there is a corresponding birthstone entailed to it. For instance, the birthstone of the people born in the month of January is garnet, for February is amethyst and the list goes on until the month of December. Ampng the twelve duly recognized birthstones, ruby and garnet are two of the most interesting birthstones that have been identified.
Describing them comparatively, ruby is the birthstone for the month of July while garnet is the birthstone for the month of January.
In evaluating the toughness of these stones using the Mohs scale, Ruby gemstones is tougher compared to garnet. Ruby has a toughness meter of 9.0 while Garnet has only 7.0 – 8.0. However, garnets are still considered hard or tough but not as strong as a Ruby.
Color also differs between the two. Ruby has a wonderful color of Red, it may have different shades of red but it only has one color. Garnet, on the other hand, may have Red as its color but depending on the subclass, colors may vary.
When used to adorn jewelries, a Ruby needs treatments because it is imperfect. Garnet no longer needs any treatment or enhancements because it already is flawless.
Beautiful and elegant as they are, ruby and garnet are two of the finest gemstones that women are fond to collect. As it is worn and handled carefully, it undeniably adds color and grace that only women can deliberately express. Both gems are worth the money. However, it still is best to learn a thing or two to know the difference between each gemstone.
