Among the many tablet computers available in the market, iPad by Apple Inc. and Blackberry Playbook by Research In Motion (RIM) are two of the most sought after brands by consumers. The former being known for its user- friendly operating system and the “mother” of all tablet computers, while the latter being the most recent and has better features according to some supporters.
In terms of operating system, iPad operates using Apple iOS which boasts for having an “easy-to-use interface, amazing features, and rock-solid stability” based on its latest version iOS 4. In another way, Playbook operates using BB Tablet OS which is a relatively new QNX-based operating system and is specifically designed to perform multitasking and has a built in Flash.
In terms of display, Playbook has a 7 inch LCD full touch enabled screen with a resolution of 1024 x 600. In contrast, iPad has a bigger screen than that of Playbook measuring to 9.7 inches and having an LED back-lit LCD display with a resolution of 1024 x 768. Having said these, Playbook is smaller, lighter, and slimmer as compared to iPad and therefore more portable and easy to hold.
Other features included for Playbook are 1GB onboard RAM, a dual-core Corex A9 processor with a speed of 1GHz, and a PowerVR SGX 540 graphics engine. For iPad, it runs with 256MB RAM, an Apple A4 (ARMv7) processor with a speed of 1GHz, and a PowerVR SGX 535 graphics engine.
What sets Playbook ahead from iPad is that it has two cameras with 5 megapixels on the back and 3 megapixels on the front. Both cameras are fitted to record high definition (HD) videos. However in iPad2, modifications are made and it now comes with dual camera and a gyro sensor.
With all these taken into consideration, one can easily assume that Playbook has a lot of features that sets it greatly apart from iPad. However, if popularity is the basis of discussion, clearly iPad still owns the throne.
