What is difference between Ocean and Sea
It is common knowledge that a sea is smaller than an ocean. Nevertheless, aside from the size difference, there are countless other differences between seas and oceans. Seas are mostly found near a large land mass with others being enclosed by land, such as the world known Aral and Caspian Seas.
In general, all oceans comprise of most of the world’s water content. Hence, oceans are very large as compared to seas. Mediterranean Sea is the world’s largest sea and it covers an area of 1,143,900 square miles. While this appears like a very large size, it is actually quite small when placed side by side with a small ocean called the Artic that covers 5,428,000 square miles.
The number of seas and oceans in the world also differs. Seas are many in number and they can be located on most continents. However, there are just five oceans namely, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Arctic Ocean and Southern ocean.
As seas are closer to land are usually much shallower in contrast to oceans, most animal and plant life best thrives on sea beds as it is well lit. Oceans, conversely, have very steep ocean beds and thus they only support basic forms of like shrimp and bacteria that survive in isolated areas. The absence of light and presence of high pressure in ocean beds results in less marine life. Actually, an ocean can reach a depth of more than 10,000 feet, whereas seas can only go as deep as 4000 feet.
4. Diving instruments
It is far simpler to dive into a sea than it is to do the same action on an ocean. Diving to a sea bed requires simple scuba equipment. However, to reach the ocean’s bed requires a distinct vessel called Bathyscaphe that can tolerate the high pressure present at the ocean’s bottom
Finally, a sea empties its water into an ocean, whereas oceans generally do not have any outlets.
