Diabetes Mellitus in one disease that is caused by the alteration of the normal function of the endocrine system in maintaining the blood sugar levels in the normal state. Such system has the basic responsibility of producing bodily products that keep the components of the body at an optimal function and in balance. When such function fails, the risk of developing Diabetes Mellitus is greater. Such condition is indicated when blood sugar levels exceed the normal levels, which is less than 100 mg/dL. When such condition is developed, permanent medical treatments are employed. One of which is the administration of insulin.

Insulin comes in different concentrations. Two of which are NPH Insulin and Regular Insulin. Regular Insulin is considered to be a short acting drug while NPH insulin is an intermediate type, which has the capacity to last for a longer period of time compared to the regular ones.

Apart from duration of effectivity, NPH differs from regular insulin in terms of appearance and method of administration. Regular insulin comes in clear consistency and are the only type which can be administered via intramuscular injection. NPH, on the contrary, is presented in a cloudy solution and is administered only through subcutaneous injection.

Apart from that, NPH insulin and regular insulin differ in the time it takes effect. Regular insulin takes effect in a matter of 30 minutes to 1 hour whereas NPH insulin requires 1 to 2 hours waiting time to take effect.

While NPH and regular types of insulin differ in onset, duration and peak, the administration of such types have a common goal of decreasing the levels of blood sugar at an acceptable range. Thus, it is vital that individuals prescribed to take such medications be knowledgeable enough about these drugs.
