Most women’s titles normally show their current marital status. In fact, this is one point that differentiates Ms from Miss. Learn these differences below. Miss originated early in the 16th century, whereas Ms started being used in the 19th century. This is an important fact since its extensive use came about because of a revolution that occurred during the 19th century. It also creates an amazing view of how ideas and language develop within society.

1. Miss

This is the title of respect that is traditionally used for unmarried women. Its use is also synonymous with young women, especially when the name of the female is not known. For instance, ‘Excuse me Miss; you have dropped your phone’. It started in the I6th century where it was used like the shortened term of the word mistress. Many people consider it as a courtesy and it is currently being used for announcing titles. For example, in cases where a lady is declared to have achieved something, she might be called ‘Miss Congeniality’.

The strict usage of Miss shows that woman is not married. It should be noted, however, that titles like ‘Sir’ and ‘Mr.’ do not show whether the person is single or married. This represented inequality and it resulted in a women’s revolution during the 19th century.

2. Ms.

This title refers to a woman, but does not portray whether she is single on not. It started be utilized in the 1940s when the marital condition of a woman is either unknown or irrelevant. By the 1980s, women actively promoted the title of Ms as it provided a better equality to Mr. furthermore, Ms is used when referring to a woman who epitomizes a certain attribute. A good example is Ms. Dependability.

Despite their differences, these titles are used with a noble intention of implying respect.
