Answer #1

Pregnant women are faced with the decision of selecting a health practitioner to assist then during their pregnancy till the delivery date. There are two healthcare practitioners that are usually involved in pregnancy. A midwife educates the woman all through the pregnancy period, and obstetrician helps deliver the baby.

1. Requirements

Obstetrician is basically a doctor who has passed several board exams so as to gain the ability of engaging in various medicine practices. This means whenever a problem is related to delivery or labor, the obstetrician can handle it easily. In contrast, a midwife only has to complete a nursing course along with a postgraduate certificate in midwifery. Usually, most midwives have the chance to proceed to study obstetrics.

2. Responsibilities

Most obstetricians recommend pain relieving medication and they deliver the child in a hospital with complete medical support. They also recommend using drugs to manage the pain associated with labor. Some of the medical interventions that obstetricians use include things like forceps, episiotomy, vacuum or cesarean in delivery. Meanwhile, a midwife does her to best to carry out a healthy delivery through using pain management techniques like meditation schemes, birth ball, exercises and breathing. During delivery, the midwife guides the woman to use the best positions for successful delivery.

3. Place of work

Usually, both professionals work in hospitals, but you are likely to find a midwife assigned to rural areas. Hence, the midwife is supposed to personally train pregnant women on what they should eat and do. They are more involved to ensure successful delivers. If the pregnant woman develops a problem, the midwife requests for help from an obstetrician. The obstetrician will then take the necessary medical measures, which include surgery.

While obstetrician monitors the pregnant mother only and the child, the midwife offers held before and after delivery through ensuring proper postnatal care.
