Answer #1

Magnesium and magnesium oxide can be found here on earth and both have uses. Magnesium is just an element while magnesium oxide is already a compound. Aside from their composition, they also differ in many ways.

Magnesium is represented by MG symbol with an atomic number of 12. It is also one of the ten most abundant elements on earth. Magnesium combines with other elements to form a compound. When magnesium reacts with oxygen, magnesium oxide is formed. Magnesium oxide has a symbol MgO and it is found to be white solid.

The properties of magnesium are different than that of magnesium oxide. They have different texture, color, and reactions with other elements. For example, when magnesium Mg reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl), magnesium chloride (MgCl2) and hydrogen gas (H2) will be produced. When magnesium oxide reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl), what will be produced are Magnesium chloride (MGCl2) and water (H2O).

Since magnesium is a metal, it is malleable and ductile. It can also be used as electric conductor. Magnesium oxide is a ceramic so it can be easily fractured and can be used as electrical insulator.

Magnesium can be used in the industry. It is helpful in production of aircrafts and automobile since it is also comparable to aluminum. Magnesium oxide can be used in agriculture, construction, and other industrial needs. Magnesium oxide is the basic ingredient in making cement. Its powder form can be used as preservation of documents, books, newspapers, etc since it can absorb moisture.

Magnesium is also helpful to our body. It makes the bones and muscles relax. Magnesium is used to cure cardiovascular diseases and has the ability to treat muscular spasms. Magnesium oxide is also useful in the field of medicine. It is used as remedy for acidity and heartburn. Magnesium oxide is found in may laxatives and antacids and found to be effective in relieving indigestion.

Magnesium and magnesium oxide may be different but their uses are too important to be ignored.
