It is not easy to differentiate between a jumper horse and a hunter horse. To tell these two animals apart, you have to be quite familiar with the anatomy and stance of both horses. A simplified distinction is provided below.
1. Classification
A jumper horse is normally assessed more closely in its hindquarters so as to test whether it can easily do a great jump when an obstacle is placed in front of it. In contrast, a hunter horse is not evaluated closely and more focus is placed on external appearance and upright stance.
2. Power
Jumper horses display much more energy and power as they normally require using this power when they perform. Jumping over obstacles is no simple feat, particularly with a rider on top of the horse. While hunter horses should be capable of covering a large ground area with the smallest effort, they do not have as much hind leg power like jumper horses.
3. Appearance
Hunters are more attractive and beautiful as compared to jumper horses. Actually, more time is taken when selecting hunter horses to ensure that only the most appealing horses are selected. In addition, when jumper horses are selected, jumping power is generally of more importance than looks.
4. Function
Hunter horses should be capable of performing high quality movements with consistent gait all through the show. During any performance, the rider and hunter horse are required to show a harmonious relationship allowing for a calm and free-flowing horse ride. However, jumper horses are involved in a more complex landscape that is filled with numerous obstacles and other elements. Scoring during a horse jumping performance is normally fixed as it is based on accuracy, speed and distance.
Even if certain horses can handle acting like both a hunter and a jumper simultaneously, such instances are very rare. The training and discipline of both types of horses also differs.
