Difference between Human and Primates

In: Animals Asked By: daniel [554 Orange Star Level]
Answer #1

Since humans are essentially primates, distinguishing these two terms can be somewhat hard. However, humans are part of Homo sapiens species, despite being primates. The largest primates are gorillas and they have distinct features that make them different from humans.

1. Movement

Gorillas normally move around through making use of their knuckles. Hence, they cannot remain balanced unless their use their knuckles for their support. In contrast, humans can easily move around using two legs. Additionally, humans do not have any problem maintaining their balance.

2. Food

Gorillas and other primates are generally vegetarians. They survive on shoots, fruits and bamboo among others. Conversely, human beings are omnivorous in nature. This means they are capable of consuming both non-vegetarian and vegetarian foods.

3. Life expectancy

Humans have a greater life expectancy than gorillas. The average human life expectancy is around 70 years, but it may even reach 85 years based on varying factors such as diseases and region. However, gorillas only reach about 40 years.
4. Communication
Even though gorillas are considered like a very intelligent species, they are incapable of communicating effectively. There are few gorillas in captivity that have been taught sign language so as to allow them to communicate. Nonetheless, humans boast of greatly developed skills of communication.

5. Nature

While gorillas just survive in their natural environments, humans have a more curious nature. In fact, humans try to understand their environment better and look for ways of changing and influencing it. It is such curiosity that has caused the creation of advanced technology, tools and science.

Finally, gorillas normally live in groups of more than 20 animals. However, humans are very social beings who live in huge colonies. Additionally, humans are capable of domesticating other animals and also engaging in agriculture. Humans have even invented advanced technology so as to colonize other continents.
