Answer #1

Holstein and Brown Swiss are kinds of dairy cattle that are well known around the globe. In fact, of the over 500 varying cattle breeds, it is the aforementioned cattle breeds that are most popular due to their unrivaled yearly milk production. As such, Holstein and Brown are the favorites amongst dairy farm owners and breeders as well.

1. Place of origin

Holstein cow originated from the Netherlands and it is highly recommended due to its high milk production rate. Also called the Holstein-Friesian or Friesian cow, it has become a common cow in dairy farms. In contrast, Brown Swiss originates from Switzerland, also called Swiss Alps. As it comes from a harsh climate, this cow has learned how to acclimatize in extremely harsh conditions.

2. Color

The Holstein has unique white and black spots that cover its whole body. Furthermore, some kinds of Holstein also have a brownish or reddish color even though it is very rare to find such. On the contrary, Brown Swiss has a very light skin color and it generally looks to be silvery or brown.

3. Rearing

Most cattle breeders like breeding the Brown Swiss cattle than the Holstein. This is because Brown Swiss is simpler to rear as it is not very sensitive like the Holstein. Since the Brown Swiss appears more docile, friendlier and is simple rear on a daily basis, it is found in many profitable dairy farms. Furthermore, unlike the Holstein, Brown Swiss does not have special needs for proper rearing.

4. Milk production

Holstein cow leads when it comes to milk production. It has an annual output of over 20,000kg of milk, while Brown Swiss produces 19,000kg of milk. However, the milk produced by Brown Swiss has healthier butterfat content than that of Holstein.

In conclusion, both cows are great dairy cows for farmers looking to start dairy farming. However, Brown Swiss is the best choice as it can survive harsh conditions.
