What are the differences between herons and egrets

Both herons and egrets are members of the family Ardeidae. For an inexperienced bird watcher, it might not be possible to identify and differentiate a heron from an egret since they closely resemble each other in many ways..

In terms of appearance, both herons and egrets have long legs, long necks, and long bills. The long necks appear in an S-shaped manner where the head appears to be held back between the animal’s shoulders. The neck cannot be moved sideways. Instead, it only moves forward and backward. In flight, herons and egrets tuck their necks, a distinction from a close bird relative, the crane. The S-shaped neck also enables the birds to strike their food with lightning speed and precision. The long bills are used for filtering and a means to catch food.

Another feature of herons and egrets are their specialized feathers called feather down. This type of feathers are used to remove oil and slime from their feathers. Herons and egrets also live in the same type of nest. Their nesting areas are characterized as stick platforms that are usually situated in trees or low water areas. They also live in colonies. The birds are usually found in open water or edges of swamps and streams. Both birds feature short tails. Some even classify them as tailless birds.

Both herons and egrets are carnivores. The diet of herons and egrets are the same as they include the animals that live in the same habitat, the wetlands. As carnivorous birds, they eat fish, amphibians (consisting of frogs, lizards, and salamanders) as well as aquatic insects. There are cases when they also eat the chicks of other birds for food. Both types of bird often hunt in shallow areas of water for their own advantages. There are also a lot of hunting techniques that they employ to catch food.

Despite some common themes between herons and egrets, there are specific differences between these birds. Herons belong to the family Ardeidae while egrets belong to a genus. More specifically, egrets can be divided into genus Egretta and Ardea. Egrets are part of the heron family.

Egrets can be primarily differentiated from herons due to their decorative plumage. The decorative plumages, which usually occur as white, only occur when egrets are in the mating season. This existence of decorative plumage caused the egrets to be an extinct species; plumages were prized for use in hats and other decorative items.

Meanwhile the plumage of the heron bird can vary from white, gray or blue, depending on the species.

The egrets belong to the genus Egretta can be found in warmer and marsher places while genus Ardea prefers the colder climate.

Summary:
1. The main difference between heron and egrets is based on their classification and appearance.
2. Egrets are part of the heron family while herons are part of the Ardeidae family
3. The decorative plumage of the egrets during the mating season is a stand-out difference to the heron. The egret’s plumage is usually white compared to the variety of plumage colors in herons– blue, white, gray, depending n the species.
4. Egrets are further classified into genus Egretta and genus Ardea. The two genuses can be found in different places and climates. Those who belong with the Egretta are usually found in warm climates and the egrets with Ardea genus prefer the cold settings and weather.
5. Egrets were historically an endangered species due to their decorative plumage which only occurs in mating season. As adult egrets were killed, the young egrets die due to lack of food, neglect and being the food of other birds.
