“To me, good health is more than just exercise and diet. It’s really a point of view and a mental attitude you have about yourself.”
The quotation above was stated by Albert Schweitzer, a well-known physician, medical missionary, philosopher, theologian and organist. This very statement of A. Schweitzer greatly describes what health and wellness is to us.
For one, health is defined as the metabolic efficacy of a person. It is commonly perceived to be a person’s state of being free from any pain, sickness, injury, or abnormality. It also deals with the wholeness of a person’s condition that includes the physical, mental, social, and spiritual aspects of man. We perceive health in connection to having strength, energy, body resistance, and liveliness. Health is also linked with diseases with the likes of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and much more. Health care professionals are schooled and trained on how they can take care of their patient’s health and because of that, we rely on them whenever we encounter problems with regard to our health.
Wellness, for two, is defined as the condition or quality of being healthy in every aspects of man as defined in health. Wellness can be a result of one’s conscious effort in attaining a healthy lifestyle therefore it has a more personal approach into achieving a quality health. Also, wellness is proactive as it serves as an avenue to taking care of one’s health with the intention of preventing sickness and lengthening one’s life. Wellness deals with fitness, nutrition, physical activities, stress management, and satisfaction in life among many other.
In another way, there are some people who differentiate health and wellness in a manner that the former refers to the current state of on one’s healthfulness while the latter refers to the condition of one’s fitness for a long period of time.
