Difference between Gas and Diesel

Answer #1

Even though some cars are now using bio fuels, most cars either use diesel or gas. We are all aware that diesel offers far better mileage compared to gas. However, there are countless other differences as discussed here below.

1. Ignition

A key difference between these fuels is how they are burned inside a vehicle engine to offer power to the vehicle. Vehicles that use gas usually use some spark plugs for igniting the fuel. This is due to the low ratio of compression of the gas engine. In contrast, diesel engines have an elevated compression ratio, which means they generate sufficient heat. Spark plugs are therefore not needed for igniting the fuel and air mixture found in the diesel engine.

2. System

A gasoline or petrol engine usually demands a distributor, alternator or electric coil besides the spark plugs so as to be fully functional. Meanwhile, diesel engine does not require an electric system, apart from when it requires battery power so as to start. This makes diesel engines much more efficient as compared gas engines.

3. Vehicle type

These fuels also differ with respect to the kind of vehicles they are used on. Small city vehicles are associated with gas use, whereas diesel powered vehicles are appropriate for running heavy trucks. Furthermore, vans and buses also use diesel for their engines due to its cost effectiveness.

4. Pollution

Diesel engines produce a lot more smoke than gas engines. This means they pollute the environment much more than gas operated vehicles. Actually, there are several measures currently being taken to locate a better alternative to diesel.

The diesel versus gasoline debate is still ongoing and the two fuels have their own loyal votaries. Currently, both are being used in fuel efficient vehicles and they are assisting people to live functional lives.
