Clearing agent and freight forwarder have varying functions, but both are important. Freight forwarders help to store cargo that belongs to clients at a warehouse. Hence, it is common for find that most freight forwarders have their own stores. In contrast, clearing agents are responsible for handling customs clearance. Simply put, clearing agents have their firm accredited with the border agencies.

1. Responsibility

Freight forwarders have to check whether cargo is dealt with accordingly based on the client’s instructions. In contrast, clearing agents are responsible for handling the important documents and filing records at customs. In addition, such a person would also ensure that custom inspections are carried out as necessary. Freight forwarders negotiate the current freight rates so as to ensure that their clients are best served. Meanwhile, clearing agents focus on the task of giving refunds wherever necessary.

2. Bills

The freight forwarder is usually the individual who prepares the bills along with appropriate shipping documentation. These documents include the origin of the cargo also. However, clearing agents cannot issue their own bills if they are not registered. This can only happen when the clearing agent has been registered. Whereas clearing agents check and process all VAT and Duty payments where applicable, freight forwarders do not handle VAT payments.

Most clients consider freight forwards as good alternative to shipping lines. This is because freight forwarders have the capability of also dealing with customs clearance as well. Among the main favors that freight forwarders do is that they book cargo with a shipping line. After this, they act according to their clients directions on how to deal with the cargo. In conclusion, it is undeniable that the services offered by both clearing agent and freight forwarder are similarly important. These two help to ensure that the goods reach the desired clients on time.
