The words festival and celebration are oftentimes confused since they are used interchangeably. However, there are certainly various differences between these two words. Find out for yourself what differences exist between festivals and celebrations.

1. Meaning

A festival refers to a time or day of constant celebration and it can be either secular or religious in manner. Festivals normally comprise of various games, concerts and much more that are annually held or frequently in a certain town. A celebration normally occurs when a certain event is marked with festivities.

2. Purpose

One key noticeable difference between a festival and a celebration is that they vary with regards to purpose. A celebration demands a purpose for it to occur, whereas such a purpose is fundamentally absent a festival. Hence, a festival is an annual occasion of celebrations while a celebration is a key part of marking achievement or success.

3. Participants

Celebrations may involve the public as they mark personal events and achievements. However, festivals are constantly performed publicly because they are basically meant for all. Parties are not always meant for participation by all.

4. Format

Festivals usually have various programs or events that are directly connected with the drink, dress and food as well. Music festivals, dance festivals and also wine festivals are examples of major festivals held every year in major cities and towns of America and Europe. Nevertheless, celebrations do not have a set format. They are normally very unique from each other.

5. Cost

Since a festival is a communal project, the cost of setting up the festivities may be sponsored by local authorities. Nonetheless, a celebration is an idea generated by a person and thus the person is responsible for the subsequent costs.

Simply put, when you do well in your exams, you instantly celebrate. You do not start a festival for celebrating your success.
