Unless you have an extensive experience in sewing, or at least loved sewing as a hobby, you may not know what an eyelet or a grommet is, much more their differences on how they are used.

First off, eyelets are ring-like metals, usually made of brass (also tin or nickel), and are primarily used to support into a hole within a paper or a fabric material. Grommets on the other hand may be defined in two ways: one, as a hole within a material that is supported by a metallic ring (or plastic); and two, as the “ring” per se which may be the source of the confusion between grommets and eyelets.

In terms of word origin, eyelets were derived from a 14th century Old French term “oillet” which means “little eye” in layman’s terms. Grommet as a word is also derived from an Old French term “gromette” which means a chain assembling the edges of a bit from its gourmer to its bridle.

At some point in usage, both eyelets and grommets serve similar purposes. However, an eyelet is much smaller in size, thinner, and less expensive as compared to a grommet. The former is also less durable as compared to the latter. Eyelets are commonly used to support holes that do not require much durability or strength whereas grommets are usually applied to materials that are exposed to frequent stress and excessive use.

Both eyelets and grommets have extended backs. And, these extended backing is also one of the aspects between eyelets and grommets that define one from the other. Eyelets as a support ring does not offer much strength since its only reinforcement comes from the metal that extends from its front and forms like a fanning at the back. Grommets, in contrast, works differently in manner that it is strengthened by additional flat rings that is placed underneath the grommet’s extended backing which keeps the metallic ring in place and with much stability.
