At first, it is quite confusing to determine the difference between an emotional attachment and a psychological attachment. What is more difficult is to realize whether what a person feels is emotional or just psychological.

Attachment can be defined as the bond or tie created between two persons. It affects all living things, especially human beings. These bonds are very common between children and adults. The first moment of attachment happens during infancy wherein a baby feels emotionally and psychologically attached to its mother. Soon after, we build various relationships with other people, and that includes love, friendship, companionship, etc.

Emotional attachment can be defined as an array of feelings originating from the mind more specifically from the emotional part of our being while a psychological attachment involves the logical part of our being.

One similarity between these two is that both can be developed and manifest within a person at the same time. Being emotionally attached can also create a sense of psychological attachment towards the same person. To further elaborate, an emotional attachment is equivalent to the love that you feel towards the other person while a psychological attachment is equivalent to the need to be with the same person you love.

Emotional attachment deals with a person’s need to be accepted, loved and appreciated thus creating the aim that in order to survive, one person needs another. In contrast to this, a psychological attachment deals with a person’s sense of safety and security. A psychological attachment reassures a person’s existence in this world. Simply speaking, you develop a psychological attachment towards a person because you need that person in order to become successful in what you do. For example, you can be psychologically attached to your teacher without getting emotionally attached due to the teacher-student relationship developed between the two of you. This is also the same in relation to an employer and employee relationship.

In conclusion, emotional attachment refers to our inner being in relation towards others while a psychological attachment refers to our relation towards the society.
