Fetus and embryo are terms that are related to pregnancy. The embryo is the initial phase of a baby’s development from fertilization. When it reaches the 8th week, the embryo is now regarded as a fetus. There are many development differences that occur during both phases.

The foremost thing that you notice on your ultrasound is the embryo. When it reaches the 5th week, it may even display a small heartbeat. As time passes by, the small embryo develops buds that will later grow into legs and hands. This is the time a neural tube begins developing. This important neural tube develops later into both spinal cord and brain.

During this development period, the embryo receives all its crucial nourishment from amnion or uterine tissue. The placenta starts to develop in this stage as well. The placenta accts like the connection between the baby and mother. It is used for supplying nourishment and oxygen to the baby.

In general, the mother goes through several physical changes as well. Some of the main symptoms include lethargy, loss of appetite and nausea. The first pregnancy phase is very crucial as the main organs are developing during the embryo phase. You should take good care of yourself during this vital stage as most miscarriages normally occurring within this period.

The fetus starts developing from 8th week onwards. After the embryo has reached the fetus stage, important organs like kidneys, liver and brain start working inside the baby’s body. Additionally, it is possible to see the differentiation in the toes and fingers. This is the time that the gender of a child can be identified as an ultrasound can easily show the exterior genitalia.

The physical symptoms of pregnancy usually ease up once the fetus has been formed. Nevertheless, some women experience continuous indications even during this phase.
