PERT and CPM are some of the major tools used for attaining more efficient and faster completing of very complex projects. As these two techniques serve a similar basic use, there are some key similarities between them. Nevertheless, the differences between PERT and CPM are many and they will discussed in the following article so as to help those who currently have doubts concerning their differences.

1. Function

CPM is fundamentally used determination purposes as it only takes on time estimate for the completion of any activities within a project. Furthermore, it also enables for expenses to be estimated, thus being a beneficial tool that offers control over both expenses and costs. Conversely, PERT is used for providing a hopeful time estimate. It is thus used for control and planning of time for conclusion of a certain project.

2. Application

PERT is best applied in places where there is a high level of uncertainty that pertains to the conclusion time of specific activities. As such, it is popularly utilized most in development and research projects. This is because it is hard not possible to really know what time every activity is going to take. Having estimates through using PERT helps to figure out the best path to take.

3. Effectiveness

CPM allows for a clear estimation of expenses along with time. Hence, while PERT basically enhances planning, CPM is more effective as it can be easily used for purposes of controlling how much a project will cost and the amount of time it will take for completion.

In conclusion, both CPM and PERT enable users to better manage their resources through analyzing varying kinds of schedules as well as balancing how resources are used. Thus complex projects can be well managed and time delays eliminated through using these two management methods simultaneously.
