What are the differences between BP and Exxon?
While Exxon and BP are both household names in the field of fuel and automotive requirements, they are both somewhat different as companies. True, they both put their name to petrol, diesel and other automotive fuels, but the actual companies vary significantly in size and purpose.
Exxon is, quite simply, a brand name which provides motor fuel and other automotive related products produced by parent company ExxonMobil. Between the years of 1972 and 1999, the name Exxon was the title of the corporation formerly known as the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. Exxon’s parent company, the Exxon Mobil Corporation on the other hand is a gigantic multinational gas and oil company, directly descended from John Rockefeller’s Standard Oil company. The company was founded in November 1999 by merging the two companies Exxon and Mobil, the headquarters of which remain in Texas, USA.
With these details in mind, BP is more akin to Exxon Mobile than it is to the brand Exxon. Rather than simply existing as the brand name for a series of products, BP or British Petroleum, is another enormous worldwide gas and oil corporation with its headquarters by the River Thames in London. BP is currently the third biggest company of its kind in the world and one of the richest organisations the world has ever seen. With operations in over 80 countries, BP produces no less than 3.8 million barrels of oil every single day, currently operating over 22,000 service stations across the world. At the commencement of the year 2010, BP was known to has worldwide oil reserves of around 18.3 billion barrels. BP is also one of the world’s leading companies in the research for alternative and renewable energy sources, including hydrogen, wind and solar power.
