Answer #1

Autism and Asperger’s are two ailments that are part of a bigger diagnostic category known as ASD or Autistic Spectrum Disorders. As such, there is great confusion with regards to the distinctions between autism and asperger’s. Even doctors have a hard time establishing a clear distinction between these two conditions. This article explains the aspects of both conditions and how to tell between them.

1. Behavioral differences

People with autism appear just like other normal people. However, they have different behaviors from other people and they generally resist change and appear withdrawn. They frequently throw tantrums, flap their limbs in strange ways and also cry or laugh for no reason. Conversely, people with asperger’s might exhibit abnormal or odd communication skills. The person may also opt to avoid relationships and lacks interest in other peers. Captivatingly, those with asperger’s normally do not exhibit delays in cognitive development or language like those with autism. In fact, asperger’s is said to make patients more conscious about their immediate environment.

2. Normal function

Not all people with either autism or asperger’s lack the capability of functioning normally. Actually, some of these people are considered as highly functioning with the ability of interacting socially and also taking care of themselves. However, those with asperger’s are typically viewed as eccentric or odd as they still possess behaviors that do not fit together with what the society considers as normal. On the other hand, autistic people display obsessive attachments to specific objects. With regards to normal function, these individuals might act deaf and repeat some words frequently or be fully non-verbal. However, verbal autistic individuals also lack the capability of starting a conversation.

Asperger’s does not affect normal body function and people with this condition perform very well in social and intelligence functions. However, autism affects body functions and people affected have difficulty living normal lives as they have limited interest range and poor motor dexterity.
