Difference between asleep and sleep

The words “sleep” and “asleep” are different from each other in a manner that the former is often expressed in a sentence as either a verb (action word) or a noun (subjects or objects within a sentence), whereas the latter is often expressed in a sentence as either an adjective (words that describes the noun or pronoun) or an adverb (words that modifies the verb, another adverb, or an adjective).

Sleep as a noun is known by most people as the natural, cyclic state by which the body and mind temporarily rests. It is best described by having the eyes closed, normally lying in a comfortable cushion, by which the conscious state is either partially or completely lost. Also notable characteristic during sleep is that the body is less responsive and has less body movement.

When used as a verb in a sentence, the word “sleep” goes along with an object, example: “This bed sleeps two adult persons”.

Asleep, on the other hand, when used as an adverb within a sentence normally refers to the status of “sleep” itself. It also defines the condition of being inactive, resting, dormant, or numb even to the point of being related to death. In some cases, “asleep” as an adverb is accommodated within a sentence by a verb phrase “to fall”, example: “Gabrielle fell asleep as soon as she finished taking her medicine”. The definition of “asleep” as an adverb also goes the same when it is applied as an adjective in a sentence.

Below are examples of sentences using “sleep” as a noun and verb, and “asleep” as an adjective and adverb.

Sleep

His sleep was interrupted by the crashing sound at the kitchen. (noun)

To sleep the night away. (verb)

Asleep

She was asleep all throughout the operation. (adjective)

The children fell asleep upon hearing a lullaby. (adverb)
