What are the differences between Angina and Myocardial Infarction?
Health is basically one vital aspect in human existence that needs to be nourished and constantly maintained at an optimal level of functioning. However, the modern times of today have made a significant impact to the kind of lifestyle most individuals undertake. Due to the rapid changes that man encounters, it is quite inevitable that certain serious diseases can set in. two of the most common yet fatal diseases that affect the cardiovascular system are angina and myocardial infarction. Angina is the condition where severe chest pain is felt due to the poor supply of oxygen in the heart. Myocardial infarction, on the other hand, is the death of one portion of the heart mainly because blood supply hhas halted.
Basing from the definitions given, it is quite obvious that the major difference between angina and myocardial infarction is their impact. While angina is a curable disease since it is only temporary, myocardial infarction is a permanent condition that one can even die due to such onset.
Another difference between the two cardiac conditions is their duration. Angina usually last for just a few minutes, approximately 3 to 5 minutes, just until blood is able to reach the heart for oxygen to be supplied. Myocardial infarction, however, lasts longer, usually not less than 24 hours. It lasts this long due to the fact that there is complete absence of blood supply to the heart.
In terms of treatment, the pain associated with angina can be relieved by taking nitroglycerin while myocardial pain can only be relieved by immediate intake of morphine. More so, angina has milder signs and symptoms compared to the manifestations associated with myocardial infarction.
Although technology is advancing, angina and myocardial infarction remain to threat the precious lives of many individuals.
