Software applications can be client-based or web-based. Web application can be accessed through the Internet while client server can run only in a client computer. These two terms are commonly compared so here are the differences between the two:
In buying web application, everything is packaged so there is no need to maintain the system. There is an IT support that controls and upgrades the web application system. With client server, there is much control with IT decisions but then there is additional cost for maintenance and upgrade.
Since client application can run on your own computer network, there is better control with regard to the cost since you will only pay for what you get. The upgrades and features can be done by the owner and do not depend on what is being offered by the web system. However, there is a disadvantage of applying for a license which can be very expensive. For web application, the cost is based on subscription. This is less expensive but then subscribing yearly, if accumulated, can cost higher than buying the whole system as what the client server application does.
Web-based application can be accessed everywhere as long as there is internet connection. You can use other computers to access the software. With client-server, it can only be accessed in the PC so no internet connection is needed. For bigger companies, they have local network to access the software within the office.
There are more users with web applications therefore it is much slower to process the information. With client-server, applications are faster because it can only be accessed by an individual or small group of users.
With the comparison of the two applications, choosing your next software will be easy and convenient. As long as you know what is good for your business or personal use, then select the software application the suits your needs.
